Assistant Professor; Tenure-Track – Applied Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 15, 2026.

We invite applications from researchers whose research is at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization. Our Scientific Computing, Machine Learning and PDE research group (SciMAP  ) has established strengths in scientific computing, approximation theory, machine learning, the analysis of PDEs, and the mathematics of data. The successful candidate will build on and complement these strengths, develop a vibrant research program, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide service to the department, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments.

The Department of Mathematics maintains close connections with many units in the Faculties of Science, Applied Science, and others on campus, through long-standing research activities. SFU is a founding member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), which promotes research, training, and outreach in the mathematical sciences across Western Canada. Situated on the Burnaby campus, we are a short walk from the University Childcare Centre, athletic facilities, scenic hiking, and mountain biking trails.

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate must:

• Hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related discipline.
• Have an outstanding scientific record of research at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization.
• Demonstrate strong potential in their future research plans.
• Demonstrate the potential to strengthen the SciMAP group in research, teaching of upper- division and graduate-level courses in applied mathematics, and graduate trainee supervision.
• Demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Demonstrate interest and ability to realize excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, and in the supervision of highly qualified personnel.

The following are considered assets:

• Demonstrated record of research on applications arising in the physical sciences or engineering. Experience in weather or climate science will be an asset.
• Evidence of strong commitment to service to the academic community.

• A research statement (typically 3-5 pages) that describes the candidate’s research experience, goals, and a five- year plan for their research program.
• Three examples of peer-reviewed published scholarly work.
• A teaching statement (typically 3-5 pages) that describes the candidate’s teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
• A statement (typically 1 page) describing how you contribute to promoting a culture of inclusive excellence through your teaching, research, or service – for example, how you support inclusive teaching practices or how you take into consideration biases/barriers that may be present in research.
• Three reference letters by referees who can comment on your suitability for this position.
