Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care (PCU) Stepdown position requiring a NE or compact RN license, with strong skills in telemetry and titrating drips.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a 40-bed Progressive Care Unit within an acute hospital setting
  • Unit serves adult patients with cardiac, med/surg, dialysis, oncology, vascular, sepsis, respiratory, stroke, post-stent, post-pacer, and renal failure cases
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:4-5 for both days and nights
  • RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry/monitor strips
  • Competency with arterial lines and management of titratable drips such as heparin, nitro, dopamine, cardizem, amiodarone, and insulin is required
  • Shifts are 12-hour days ), with every other weekend required and at least two holidays covered per contract
  • Floating to Med Surg or to ICU (with PCU-level assignments) may be required
  • High flow respiratory equipment is used; experience troubleshooting is expected
  • EMR system is Epic
  • A pass/fail open book exam on skills covered in orientation must be passed with a minimum score of 90%
  • Team includes charge nurses present on every shift, with nurse aides/patient care techs supporting at a 1:12 ratio
  • Focus is placed on patient experience, responsiveness, and excellent communication about medications
  • Cultural competence is important due to a diverse patient population
  • Navy blue scrubs are required
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in direct patient care areas
  • One day of unit/department-specific orientation provided
  • Overhead and portable lifts, vein finders, and bladder scanners are available
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Requested time off (RTO) must be submitted upfront; up to 7 days are allowed per 13-week contract
Requirements
  • Active NE or compact RN license required at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of recent PCU/Stepdown RN experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required; pending certifications are not accepted
  • Demonstrated competency in arterial line management and titration of critical drips
  • Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
  • Driver’s license is required to verify compliance with the 50-mile radius rule
  • Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) in any facility associated with Common Spirit, including CHI and Dignity Health, within the past year
  • References must include one supervisor from the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years, with employment dates and rehire eligibility
