Salary: $4,243 per month (SR-16, Step

D)

Shift Work: Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Duties Summary

This is the entry trainee level in the Biosecurity Inspector series, designed to provide a career-oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, scope and interrelationships of the State’s plant and non-domestic animal quarantine and pest control programs. On-the-job training assignments provide practical understanding and initial introduction to the organization, programs, policies and objectives of the agency as well as furnish preliminary experience in the application of principles, procedures, work processes, techniques and scientific reference material to actual situations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in one of the following areas:
    Agricultural, Landscape, or Integrated Pest Management;
    Entomology;
    Horticulture;
    Nematology;
    Plant and Environmental Protection Science;
    Plant Pathology;
    Tropical Agriculture and the Environment; or Tropical Plant and Soil Science; OR Biological or Agricultural Science – the education must have included coursework described in (A) and (B) below:
    • One (1) course in entomology, nematology, pest management, plant and environmental protection science, plant pathology, tropical agriculture and the environment, virology, OR related courses; AND
    • One (1) course in agroecology, agronomy, botany, horticulture, plant physiology, tropical plant and soil science, weed science, OR related courses.
    In addition, for all the areas described above, the education background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; perform basic arithmetical computations; and solve complex problems logically and systematically.
  • Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Special Requirement: Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
  • Federal Criminal History Records Check: Persons who are considered for employment in positions requiring unescorted access to secured areas at the airport must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history record check. Applicants must not have been convicted of a disqualifying criminal offense within 10 years. The cost will be the applicant’s responsibility; the Department of Agricultural will provide reimbursement if the applicant successfully clears the check and provides proof of badge issuance.
