Position: School Health Assistant I, II - Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino

School Health Assistant I and II are considered full‑time for 6½ hours per day. The authorized level is School Health Assistant II. Applications are being accepted down to the School Health Assistant I in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range:

  • School Health Assistant I, SR-09
    : $2,276.14 per month
  • School Health Assistant II, SR-11
    : $2,462.76 per month
Responsibilities
  • Administers emergency first aid care to ill or injured students.
  • Takes temperature, permits students to rest in the health room as necessary, and periodically observes and talks with students to determine symptoms of illness.
  • May administer oral and topical medications only in accordance with strict program guidelines (parental request, physician’s order, school health nurse’s approval and school administration approval).
  • Contacts parents or guardians of ill or injured students to inform them of their child’s illness or injury as necessary.
  • May call for ambulance service in emergencies.
  • Performs health‑related screening tests on students such as hearing and vision screening tests, participates in health surveys, takes throat swabs in rheumatic fever surveys, and measures height and weight of students, as directed by the school health nurse.
  • Completes appropriate records; refers health records that may indicate health problems to the school health nurse.
  • Makes visual surveys of school buildings and grounds that may have contributed to injury and works with the school health nurse and school principal to correct any hazardous conditions.
  • May give basic health instruction to students.
  • May orient and supervise volunteers to assist in conducting screening tests.
  • May render emergency first aid care to school staff and administer CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean health room, including adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Provides resource information to school staff when requested, recognizing various at‑risk symptoms for referral to the appropriate staff.
  • Liaison between the home, school and community to collaborate on health services/activities.
  • Coordinates health‑related speakers to aid the class curriculum when requested.
  • Disseminates and coordinates information to employees on wellness activities and/or events for staff members of the school at the discretion of the school principal.
  • Advocates a positive and informative health and wellness program for the school.
  • Basic Education Requirements

    Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent, demonstrating the ability to read, comprehend and apply written instructions; and a high degree of verbal skill.

    Experience Requirements

    Applicants must have the experience described below.

    • Class

      Title:

      School Health Assistant I
      – 1 year general experience, 1 year specialized experience, total 2 years.
    • Class

      Title:

      School Health Assistant II
      – 1 year general experience, 2 years specialized experience, total 3 years.

    General Experience – Work involving people, establishing relationships, counseling, screening, serving as an informational resource, teaching or leading groups, community service — must be continuous, independent, and minimally supervised.

    Specialized Experience – Work demonstrating basic health knowledge and practices (personal hygiene, common illnesses), computer use. Examples include homemaker with childcare, childcare center worker, paramedical assistant, nurse’s aide, or similar.

    Substitutions Allowed
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing or related field at an accredited college or university may substitute one year of general experience and two years of specialized experience.
  • Completion of a community college program or its equivalent in medical assisting, human service, practical nursing or similar curriculum may substitute one year of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Completion of formal coursework in health and personal hygiene, child care and home management, or similar courses that cover hygiene, health, sanitation, etc., may substitute one year of specialized experience.
