Sterile Process Tech III - Evenings (2:30p - 11p)

Memorial Hermann Health System invites applications for the Sterile Process Tech III – Evenings (2:30p‑11p) position. This full‑time role supports surgical instrument sterilization and supplies throughout the hospital, and may function as a lead technician or charge person as needed.

Job Summary

Responsible for providing sterilized surgical instruments, supplies and equipment to the operating room and other hospital areas. Acts as shift lead/charge person when required, and assists in the supervision and training of other personnel, following Standard Precautions and Event‑Related Sterility principles.

Job Description

Perform all duties outlined in the Principal Accountabilities section, ensuring adherence to Sterile Processing department rules, procedures and processes. Maintain accurate records, manage supplies, and support continuous education and skill competency.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certified by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Surgical Instrument Specialist Certification (CSIS) preferred.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with instrument, equipment and supply sterilization.
  • Follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Lift and/or maneuver supplies and equipment in conjunction with others.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Team‑environment work.
  • Maintain composure and professional demeanor during tense situations.
  • Demonstrate reliable customer service through accountability, collaboration and compassion.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Lead technician/charge person on shift as needed.
  • Advanced knowledge of Sterile Processing department rules, procedures and processes.
  • Accurately handle, care for and assemble instruments/equipment per count sheet and sterilization preparation.
  • Identify, document and report equipment/tools in need of repair and ensure maintenance is completed.
  • Organize, prepare, assemble and sterilize instruments, equipment and supplies per hospital/medical facility sterilization standards.
  • Peel‑pack supplies/instruments, wrap instruments for sterilization and inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness and cleanliness.
  • Load, monitor, operate and maintain different types of cleaning and sterilization equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
  • Maintain records of all equipment and supplies, order supplies as needed, and monitor quality control and infection control standards.
  • Communicate delays, supply, instrumentation and equipment problems, substitutions involving Operating Room and other areas.
  • Increase knowledge base by accepting more complex assignments regularly.
  • Ensure safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures and standards within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promote professional growth and development by meeting mandatory/continuing education and skill competency requirements; support department‑based goals which contribute to organizational success; serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
