Position Summary

A dedicated youth development professional who provides quality care in before‑and‑after‑school and camp settings. Responsibilities include teaching values, ensuring safety, facilitating structured play and educational activities, and monitoring children’s behavior in accordance with state childcare licensing requirements and YMCA policy.

Essential Functions
  • Supervision and Safety:
    Ensure the safety and security of all children, conduct regular headcounts, maintain attendance records, and respond promptly to emergencies.
  • Behavior Management:
    Implement positive behavior management techniques to promote a respectful and inclusive environment.
  • Activity Implementation:
    Lead a variety of age‑appropriate activities, adapt them to meet diverse needs, and encourage positive social interactions.
  • Policy Adherence:
    Follow all organizational policies, including health and safety, child protection, confidentiality, sanitation, and report concerns timely.
  • Daily Operations:
    Maintain the program site and camp environment in accordance with YMCA and licensing standards.
  • Leadership:
    Supervise children under the direction of the Site Lead and model YMCA’s five core values.
  • Relationship Building:
    Maintain positive relations with children, parents, school personnel, and staff; attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Child Abuse Prevention:
    Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations, ensure proper check‑in/check‑out procedures, uphold boundaries, and secure unrestricted areas.
Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 6 months working with youth in a licensed facility, church, school, or equivalent setting.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement age‑appropriate activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Current tuberculosis examination record and compliance with local health regulations.
  • Pass a local/state background check and FBI fingerprinting.
Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED with demonstrated interest in child welfare. Prior childcare or babysitting experience is preferred.

Language Skills

Reading and comprehension of simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence and present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two‑digit numbers, and to apply these operations with money, weight, volume, and distance units.

Reasoning Ability

Apply common sense to carry out simple one‑ or two‑step instructions and handle standard situations with minimal variables.

Physical Demands

Light to moderate lifting (up to 25 lb, occasionally 50 lb), bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, standing, walking, and general hand use. Requires good hearing, vision, and sensory coordination.

Work Environment

Predominantly indoor during after‑school periods; occasional outdoor exposure to weather, noise, and cleaning supplies. Camp duties include extended standing, bending, walking long distances, and handling outdoor equipment.

Work Schedule

Before/After School:
Part‑time, Monday‑Friday, 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm (start and end times may vary). Camp:
Monday‑Friday, 6:30 am – 6:30 pm with multiple shift options. Full‑time availability for family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and trainings is required.

Travel

Travel primarily to an assigned site or camp; occasional travel to other locations may be required.
