Position: I&E Technician (Instrumentation)

I&E Technician

Reporting to the I & E Supervisor, the I&E Technician will be responsible for instrumentation and electrical basic theory, maintaining instrumentation equipment in good operating condition to ensure accuracy and timely findings, identifying, troubleshooting, and repairing the wide variety of instrumentation and electrical equipment at the refinery, and ensuring compliance with all refinery environmental, health, and safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain instrumentation equipment in good operating condition ensuring accuracy and timely findings.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation and electrical equipment at the refinery.
  • Comply with refinery environmental, health and safety standards (hot work, cold work permit, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, personal protection equipment, etc.).
  • Learn and use refinery material procurement and job planning process and software.
  • Instruct and train helpers to complete work projects.
  • Oversee work of outside contractors performing work within the instrumentation and electrical trade.
  • Perform basic formulas and math required for the job.
  • Understand and use all test equipment, e.g., ammeter, voltage tester, multimeter, megger, etc.
  • Install certified electrical equipment.
  • Work on motor starters and circuit breakers.
  • Install rigid steel conduit with correct use of seals and drains.
  • Apply knowledge of NEC and hazardous area classifications.
  • Maintain motor operated valves and automatic pump starters.
  • Identify relay trip.
  • Work on high voltage systems.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain PLCs.
  • Work closely with operations, environmental, inspections, and contractors.
  • Be available and fit for duty to take call and work overtime as needed.
  • Maintain housekeeping of the shop and work area.
  • Work cooperatively with all co‑workers and supervisors.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in written and verbal forms.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal performance, professional growth, and attendance.
  • Foster trusting relationships with co‑workers and cross‑functional work areas.

  • Perform other duties as required or directed by supervisor or supervisor’s designee.
  • Troubleshoot and repair transmitters (flow, pressure, temperature, and level transmitters).
  • Maintain assigned work area and equipment in a safe, orderly, and clean condition.
  • Promptly report any unsafe or abnormal conditions to supervisor on duty.
  • Attend emergency response classes, remain current in required training, and respond to refinery emergencies as required.
  • Execute assembling of tools and materials.
  • Understand and take directions of supervisors.
  • Maintain safety, health, and environmental standards.
Qualifications
  • Legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring visa transfer or sponsorship.
  • Eligibility to obtain a TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two‑year certification or AA degree in electronics desired.
  • Two to five years of work experience in instrumentation and/or electronics field preferred.
  • Successful employment in a previous instrumentation industrial work environment desired.
  • Five or more years in refinery work preferred.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Active TWIC credential maintained.

Hiring Range

$34.05 to $44.38 per hour.
