Job Function

Supervises and directs the operation of the power generating station to ensure safe, reliable, and cost‑effective generation of electricity to meet system demands while complying with all applicable safety and environmental regulations and laws.

Essential Functions
  • Direct and supervise shift operating personnel (including performance appraisal, teamwork and self‑directed workforce, two‑way communication, training and development, safety, and discipline) at the generating plant during normal and abnormal operating conditions, starting and shutting down of units and equipment.
  • Responsible for isolating mechanical and electrical equipment for safety and maintenance repairs.
  • Investigate, evaluate and report verbally and in writing to locate and define malfunctioning equipment, controls, systems and instruments.
  • Coordinate and support activities with system operations, maintenance, and technical personnel for operating, maintaining, testing and overhauling the generating units.
  • Maintain accurate and complete logs of all events occurring on the station during shift concerning equipment or personnel.
  • Enforce operating policies and procedures; administer shift and overtime schedules; coordinate and complete timecards.
  • Ensure plant operations are in compliance with all federal and state regulations.
  • Interact with all employees and external suppliers and customers in a positive, supportive, and collaborative manner to fulfill company strategic objectives.
  • Support two‑way communications to keep the workforce focused and well‑informed.
  • Promote teamwork and a self‑directed workforce to support quality initiatives and company vision and values.
  • Model behaviors consistent with company values; work with others to accomplish goals and maintain improvement in practices and procedures.
  • Mentor subordinates in the application of improvement tools, techniques, and behaviors to eliminate waste from daily work assignments.
  • Apply Daily Management System methods to continuously improve safety, quality, speed, timeliness, and cost of all work processes within the assigned span of control.
  • Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned, including required preparation activities.
Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of generating unit and system operation, electrical systems, operating policies, and emergency corrective procedures.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of generating units and systems.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal environmental compliance requirements.
  • Completion of the ICE Generating Station Operator curriculum (or company‑approved equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement deployment systems, principles, procedures, tools and desired behaviors.
Skills Requirements
  • Effective verbal and written communication with all levels of internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read and use technical publications such as manufacturer’s instruction manuals, unit data books, blueprints and instrument diagrams.
  • Supervisory/leadership skills and ability to work with individuals on sensitive or confrontational issues.
  • Troubleshooting skills to identify operational and maintenance problems with units and equipment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a demanding work environment.
  • Discretion, courtesy, and tact when handling difficult or sensitive issues.
Experience Requirements
  • Several years (3‑5) of operational experience as a control room operator or equivalent.
