The City of Osage City is currently seeking a dependable, hard‑working individual to join our Street & Sanitation Department as a Sanitation Collector
. This position performs essential manual labor associated with residential and commercial trash collection and helps maintain the cleanliness and safety of our community.
Under the supervision of the Street Superintendent and the on‑the‑job direction of the Sanitation Driver (crew leader), this position performs both light and very heavy manual labor duties. Employees in this role follow established city policies and procedures while working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Primary Duties- Load and unload sanitation trucks
- Guide the driver when backing the truck
- Carry refuse in containers and bundled materials
- Clean truck hoppers and wash sanitation vehicles
- Provide courteous service to residents along collection routes
- Perform minor mechanical maintenance on equipment
- Check oil, fuel, and water levels; grease trucks
- Operate truck compactor and hydraulic systems
- Assist the Street Department during peak periods as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned to benefit and support City operations
This is a physically demanding position requiring manual labor. Employees must be in good physical condition and be able to:
- Lift, carry, push, or move objects weighing 50 pounds or more (over 95% of the time)
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Tolerate exposure to solid waste and physically strenuous tasks
- Ability to operate hydraulic trash compactors and related equipment
- Valid Kansas driver’s license with an insurable driving record
- Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen
- Good references
- Strong work ethic and ability to work well with others
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance
- Strong understanding of safety procedures
- Team‑oriented mindset
