Title:
Transportation Director USD 405
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervises: Route and Activity Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Vehicle cleaners.
Post QualificationsMust possess a CDL with proper endorsements to legally transport students and operate air brakes. General mechanical knowledge of passenger vehicles, buses, and other large vehicles. Ability to work with and manage others. Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff of USD 405.
Purpose and Objectives of the PositionThe Transportation Director will ensure the safe transportation of all students and staff in USD 405.
Work Day- Minimum 8 hour workday, and 40 hour work week
- Should closely mirror typical school day but provide availability for issues with routes and activity trips
- Ensure that all vehicles are clean and safe for travel.
- Ensure that irregular and scheduled vehicle maintenance including annual inspections are completed.
- Schedule vehicles and drivers as appropriate for requested transportation and communicate with Administration to ensure transportation request has been approved before scheduling.
- Communicate with staff requesting transportation to ensure vehicle is located where staff can easily access it.
- Vehicle is properly sized for the needs of the trip.
- Conduct periodic checks for efficiency of services and employee productivity.
- Preparation of special education bus routes; assure route descriptions and student data are current.
- Preparation of regular bus routes and assure route descriptions are current.
- Keep accurate and current records of vehicle status and mileage.
- High frequency of telephone use: addressing parental concerns; related questions; communicating with building administrators.
- Maintain accurate and complete district boundary maps.
- Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
- Familiar with and conform to all Federal and State laws, regulations, and district policies regarding school transportation for regular and special education.
- Provide driver training as required to meet State Requirements.
- Plan and present ten scheduled Driver's Safety Meetings per school year as required by State law.
- Supervise the implementation of the district's drug and alcohol testing for drivers.
- Check roads in inclement weather and advise superintendent of road conditions as needed.
- Schedule and attend annual inspections made by the Kansas Highway Patrol inspector.
- Complete state and local forms and reports as required; reports should be updated on a regular basis and not be last minute.
- Work with building and district administration to ensure information for PBRs and SO66 is complete and timely.
- Ensure all other State, Local, and Federal forms and reports are complete and timely.
- Reports will be submitted as required by State, Local, and Federal policy and procedure and directed by the Superintendent.
- District Office Staff has the right to request reports at any time to ensure proper documentation is occurring.
- Maintains safety standards in conformance with state insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel, and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion, and release.
- Help prepare specifications for the lease or purchase of buses.
- Attend Scheduled Administrative Supervisor meetings.
- Attend or appoint a representative to attend IEP meetings as a subject matter expert in school transportation as needed.
- Ensure all school vehicles are prepared for safe operation by completing weekly inspections (passenger vehicles, buses, delivery vehicles, trailers, etc).

- Daily Route and Activities Trips during normal school hours are part of the salary.
- Transportation Director will be reimbursed at the Activity Driver rate for time outside of the Director's standard duty hours.
