Full time, Regular, Continuous appointment end date (if blank).

Compensation
  • $40,000.00 – Level I
  • $46,500.00 – Level II

Position Summary

Heavy Equipment Operator – responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Typical Functions
  • Operate equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front‑end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
  • Provide traffic control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags to direct highway traffic.
  • Apply herbicide to highway right‑of‑ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.
Level Descriptor
  • Level I:
    Basic level, work under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performing unskilled and semiskilled tasks in construction, maintenance and repair of highways.
  • Level II
    :
    Career level, perform skilled work at the full performance level in operating heavy equipment and performing various routine highway maintenance duties.
Education and Experience
  • Level I:
    No requirements.
  • Level II:
    One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment; certain agencies may require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license (class A or

    B) with appropriate endorsements, or a CDL tank vehicle endorsement for ODOT employees.
  • Applicable agencies require a CDL within five months of appointment.
  • Pass a drug test prior to appointment.
  • Willing to perform all job‑related travel normally associated with the position and be able to work hours other than regular shifts during emergencies; must have a telephone to receive emergency on‑call duty messages.
  • Required physical abilities: stand, walk, reach, speak, hear, sit, manipulate tools, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; routinely lift 80 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds; vision abilities: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Some positions may be safety sensitive under 63 O.S. 427.8.
