- After authorization by the facility’s licensed nurse or the resident’s treating physician, administer PRN medications.
- Organize assigned medication duties, pouring, passing, and documenting all routine prescribed medications, and give PRN medication only upon the instruction of the licensed nurse.
- Document all PRNs in accordance with state standards in all areas of the chart.
- Observe and report to the charge licensed nurse reactions and side effects of medication routinely administered to nursing facility residents.
- Take and record vital signs prior to administering medications that could affect or change vital signs.
- Administer and document regularly prescribed medications that the medication aide is permitted to administer only after personally preparing those medications; document each medication in the resident’s clinical record.
- Administer oxygen via nasal cannula or a non-sealing face mask only in an emergency; immediately notify the licensed nurse on duty or on call and document the activity and notification.
- At the discretion of the charge nurse, count narcotics, give all routine prescribed narcotics, and document them on the individual sheet and medication sheet.
- Successfully completed a state‑approved school of medication administration.
- Carry a current acknowledgment card or certification issued by a state agency.
- Willing to abide by restrictions placed on the job by the state agency.
- Certified Nursing Assistant.
