Overview
The Certified Medication Aide assists in the administering of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and the RCC. The administration of medications shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures, and practices of this Community, and the requirements of this state.
The following is a general list of key job duties and responsibilities in your position. The list is not to be considered inclusive and you will be required to perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by an authorized supervisor.
Responsibilities- Comply with the Community’s personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures.
- Comply with the nursing department’s policies and procedures.
- Report witnessed or reported allegations of resident abuse/neglect immediately to the Executive Director, RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
- Treat residents, family members, visitors, and team members with respect and dignity.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident and family information.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled.
- Report any complaints/grievances made by residents to the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse or per policy. Participate and cooperate with any Community surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Executive Director or RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
- Maintain a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
- Protect resident privacy when administering medication; knock before entering the resident’s room; accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications as ordered; report any administration errors immediately.
- Ensure medications are properly labeled and follow policy on storage, labeling, and dating.
- Complete medication charting per Community policy and procedure.
- Assist with destroying of medications and documenting/removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
- Follow procedures regarding drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
- Follow procedures for holding medications for residents who are out of the Community or per physician’s order; honor the resident’s right to refuse medications.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed; document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered and include reason(s) for refusal.
- Notify the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any refusals or reactions to medications by residents; ensure a written, signed, dated order from an attending licensed physician is on file before administering medication; verify resident identity before administering treatment.
- Follow procedures allowing residents to self-administer their medications and assist in monitoring and documenting all aspects of self-administration; notify nurse when refills are needed.
- Familiarize yourself with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
- Use personal protective equipment when exposure to blood or body fluids is possible; report hazards immediately; follow safety precautions in all duties.
- Wash hands before and after servicing residents.
- Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per community policies.
- Assist residents with daily hygiene and toileting, and assist CNAs with daily duties when needed.

Physical Requirements
- Regular worksite attendance.
- Must have a valid CMA certification in good standing with the State.
- If required to operate a motor vehicle for business purposes, must meet the Company’s Motor Vehicles policy requirements.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Must be able to work beyond normal hours and on weekends/holidays when necessary.
- Must be able to assist in evacuations during emergencies.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet general health requirements per State regulations and Company policy (may include medical/physical examinations).
- Ability to assist residents using a transfer/gait belt; awareness of physical limitations and safety considerations when lifting or carrying objects.
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, reaching various heights, pushing/pulling, hand manipulation, and other mobility tasks as described in the original listing.
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile individuals.
- Must be able to see and hear or use appropriate prosthetics to perform job duties effectively.
