The pulmonary health and rehabilitation program staff a respiratory care practitioner (full‑time, part‑time, or consultant) responsible for implementing respiratory regimens and assisting patients throughout pulmonary rehabilitation.
Responsibilities- Contribute expertise as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team to offer comprehensive treatment strategies and improve outcomes for participants.
- Communicate effectively with rehab team members about individual patient findings, concerns, and program improvement issues.
- Demonstrate willingness to strive toward proficiency in all clinical competencies.
- Show interpersonal and observational skills needed to identify psycho‑social adaptation needs and possible psychopathology (e.g., depression, anger, excessive anxiety).
- Assess patients’ modifiable risk factors and offer support and strategies for successful therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC).
- Understand and utilize contemporary health‑behavior change theories when helping participants set learning and lifestyle modification goals.
- Participate in the program’s educational efforts, classes, and/or individual sessions.
- Participate in the initial assessment and orientation of new participants.
- Assist in the development of individualized treatment plans with other staff members.
- Apply knowledge of exercise science to populations with pulmonary disease and other co‑morbidities.
- Develop and adjust individual exercise prescriptions in accordance with graded exercise testing (GXT), daily patient response in rehab, and physician recommendations.
- Supervise exercise sessions, monitoring participants for inappropriate responses.
- Measure oximetry, heart rate, and blood pressure.
- Assess participants pre‑, during, and post‑exercise, making referrals or recommendations to the participant, staff, and Medical Director.
- Observe telemetry responses when indicated.
- Document initial and daily assessment data in participant records.
- Immediately report any new, changing, or significant participant conditions (oxygen desaturation, dysrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure, or changes in status) to the supervising physician.
- Initiate ACLS measures and/or emergency care according to hospital policy.
- Assist in the collection, analysis, and reporting of individual patient outcomes and program outcomes.
- Keep current in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation through journals, in‑services, and conferences.
- Participate in emergency drills and mock codes routinely.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings.
