Description

Under the supervision of the Pottawatomie County Public Works Director, the Road and Bridge Administrative Assistant is a full-time, non-exempt position under FLSA. The primary goal of this position is to provide support to the Public Works Department in the performance of general, technical and administrative activities.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with the execution of engineering studies and designs, to include managing traffic counting programs and data collection;
  • Provides field inspections of driveway entrances and dust control applications;
  • Coordinates work with private utility companies for utility locations and maintenance projects (811/Dig Safe/Other);
  • Monitors private utility construction in County right-of-way;
  • Facilitates Right-of-way acquisition for County construction projects;
  • Inspects roads and bridges, reviews infrastructure for safety during inclement weather;
  • Meets with the public to discuss questions, concerns and projects;
  • Investigates public and employee complaints;
  • Inspects work for quality and workmanship;
  • Assists with the management of the Road and Bridge Work Order System;
  • Maintains a current Notary Public status and a KDOT Right of Way Certification;
  • Coordinates department safety meetings, Safety Committee meetings, and serves as a representative on the county Risk Management Committee;
  • Coordinate new hire orientation of Public Works Employees.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required;
  • Ensures positive public relations with public and staff;
  • Ability to operate a vehicle legally in the State of Kansas.
Marginal Functions
  • Assists in maintaining project files;
  • Provides construction inspection;
  • Writes reports and letters;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
Education/Training/Experience

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. Technical or vocational school course work in engineering or construction practices or equivalent is preferred.

Experience: Five years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, ability and skills may be accepted.

Salary range for this position is $21.47 - $30.90 per hour / 40-hours per week

Essential Physical Functions & Environmental Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, and must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may be frequently be exposed to extreme environmental conditions, excessive noise, uneven terrain, fumes/odors, and dust/dirt. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents including policies, compliance documents, laws and regulations, and other directives. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to read, write, and interpret written and verbal communication by email, phone, and in-person effectively.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

A thorough knowledge of computers, construction techniques, materials and principles and practices of civil engineering is required. Employee should be able to operate computers, builder’s levels, and transits with a high degree of accuracy. Employee shall have the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and written instructions. Employee shall also possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
