Smith Steel & Fabrication is a leading manufacturer of specialized, all welded, steel tanks for light‑duty and industrial bulk storage applications. Tri‑Mach Group Inc. acquired Smith Steel in January 2026. Smith Steel & Fabrication has designed and fabricated round and square steel tanks from our location in Atwood Ontario for close to 50 years. Our products are all hand built, allowing us the ability to custom fabricate almost any tank to meet the specific requirements of our clients.
Smith Steel & Fabrication is about more than just tanks. Whether it’s a custom smoker an industrial flare‑stack, a stainless steel structure or just about anything else, our experienced team can design and fabricate it. Coupled with our large finishing bay, our capabilities ensure your project is completed within specifications, on time and on budget.
A Mechanical Designer is responsible for designing various mechanical devices that will be vital in developing large structures, working closely with our team of Project Managers, Shop Personnel to ensure project success. We are looking to add someone to our team who is a lateral thinker, able to navigate complexity and embrace ambiguity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Design a variety of tanks, structures and over industrial bulk products
- Correspond with Project Manager(s) to ensure design is reflective of the scope of work
- Involvement in all stages of the design process from concept to approval drawings, including the creation of detailed shop drawings
- Own the research, design, and test of product or product subsystem development utilizing CAD and analysis tools.
- Complete Solidworks 3D modeling and provide 2D drawing packages
- Create bills of materials in the ERP system for procurement
- Work with purchasing to source materials from capable vendors for the purpose of engineering prototypes
- Assist with the assembly of product information for technical writers to create manuals
- Work with sales to create concepts and project scopes
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
- You have a minimum of 3 years industrial equipment design experience
- Expert level knowledge of Solid Works/PDM and AutoCAD 2D
- Comprehensive understanding of metal fabricating equipment and experience with welding and sheet metal
- Familiar with creating Bills of Materials (BOMS) for procurement of materials and components
- You have a working knowledge of automated equipment and material handling
- Experience in hydraulic and pneumatic schematic creation is considered an asset
- You have an applied knowledge of Design for Manufacturing techniques
- Able to communicate completed designs effectively using 2D engineered drawings
- Fluent in MS Suite applications

Salary Range ForThe Role:
$35.00 to $43.00 per hour
