Position: Para educator - Structured Learning ( MSI )
Location: Maize

Primary

Purpose:

Provide support to students with disabilities through instructional support, modeling, monitoring and documenting student activities across all instructional settings.

Qualifications:
  • Education/Certification:

    High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • All Elementary para educators must be highly qualified (48+ college hours OR college degree OR take/pass Highly Qualified Assessment).
Special Knowledge/

Skills:
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Ability to present information one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students.
Experience:

None required but preferred.

Major

Responsibilities And Duties:
  • Provides academic support to students (e.g., reading, writing, verbal skills, etc.) and supports the implementation of IEP goals, assisting in adapting student needs into mainstream classrooms, and ensuring student success.
  • Assist with adapting classroom activities, assignments, and materials to support and reinforce classroom objectives while working under the direction of the licensed staff member.
  • Utilize effective communication skills with a variety of individuals (e.g., supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, etc.) supporting the implementation of IEP objectives and evaluation of student progress.
  • Attend assigned meetings to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Complete documents regarding student(s) daily activities for the purpose of completing daily logs and student’s hourly activities.
  • Model desired behaviors (e.g., conversation, manners, cleaning activities, listening, everyday interactions, etc.) for students in multiple settings.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs while assisting with daily living activities and behavioral skills.
  • Remain with students at all times ensuring the safety of students, remove students when necessary, and de-escalate situations outside the classroom.
  • Report incidents for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to State Law and school policies as a mandated reporter.
  • Work cooperatively with all staff on various tasks and/or assignments.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and reteach appropriate curriculum to meet student needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
  • Tools/Equipment Used:
    Standard office equipment including computer and phone, standard classroom technology including computers and peripherals.
  • Posture:
    Prolonged standing, frequent walking.
  • Mobility:
    Significant pushing/pulling, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping and fine finger dexterity.
  • Loading: frequent lifting and carrying (up to 75 pounds).
  • Environment:
    Primarily indoors; some outdoor student supervision. Risk for exposure to injury and/or illness in varying atmospheric conditions.
  • Mental Demands:
    Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, solve problems, make decisions and be flexible.
  • Attendance:
    Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations.
  • Clearances:
    Background check and current TB test.
