Special education teacher for USD #341 High School. Collaborates with general education colleagues to support instructional processes and facilitates learning for students with an individual education plan (IEP). Directs the instruction, assessment, and program planning for students with learning disabilities and works primarily in the general education setting, stepping into the resource room when needed. Reports to Keystone Administrators and building administrators in assigned buildings.
EssentialFunctions
- Manage IEP‑defined programs for assigned students.
- Collaborate with the district, Keystone, outside agencies, and families to deliver IEP‑mandated services.
- Create an environment that promotes social‑emotional learning through a positive behavior system.
- Supervise para educators (training, scheduling, performance monitoring and ensuring standards).
- Maintain accurate records: IEPs, behavior plans, functional behavioral assessments, progress monitoring, charting and reporting.
- Apply instructional methods to meet classroom/subject specific needs and effectively deliver an individualised program.
- Differentiated instruction using online curriculum, alternative curriculum, multimedia, assistive technology, modified content, multi‑sensory techniques.
- Provide special services in contexts dictated by IEPs: general education classrooms (co‑teach), the special education resource room, and other school or community environments.
- Participate as a member of the school staff: attend required meetings, provide general supervision, and fulfil other teaching duties.
- Document incidents (e.g., fights, abuse, substance abuse, bullying, emergency safety interventions) as a mandated reporter.
- Maintain professional license through required staff development activities.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
- Experience:
Direct teaching experience, student‑teaching assignments and related professional experience are preferred. - Education:
Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree aligned with or in pursuit of the required teaching license. - Equivalency:
Valid testing certificates and licenses required. - Driver’s licence and evidence of insurance.
- Continuing education / training clearances.
- Assessment and record‑keeping: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment and relevant computer software; preparing and maintaining accurate records; writing professional documents; facilitating meetings; working with numbers; solving problems.
- Educational knowledge: psychology and educational principles; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and laws; child development stages; assessment techniques; learning strategies.
- Abilities: scheduling, data collating, equipment operation, independent problem‑solving, communications with diverse groups, confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, teamwork, patience, effective relationships.
Typical physical demands include occasional lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, some pushing and pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and fine finger dexterity. The job requires 80% sitting, 15% walking and 5% standing in a generally hazard‑free environment.
