Overview
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Pottawatomie County Director of Geographic Information Systems, the GIS Technician is a non-exempt position under FLSA. The primary goal of this position is to assist in the creation and timely updating of the counties’ Geographic Information System. The position is responsible for the current upkeep of the GIS coverages and ownership tracking in the county.
Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. Training using GIS software (ESRI software preferred) is required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills. Knowledge of chain of title relating to ownership of real property is desired.
Experience: One to two years of similar or related experience is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Skills and Abilities
Employee shall have the mathematical skills and the technical skills to operate computer systems and software such as MS Office, Arc/GIS, ORION, and KOMTEK. Employee must have the ability to read maps, read and interpret legal descriptions, read and interpret legal documents (ordinances, surveys, road records, court records). Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.
Problem SolvingThe work involves tasks that require special knowledge regarding GIS software, GIS principles, GIS and cartography techniques and rules.
Decision MakingDecisions regarding what needs to be accomplished and how to achieve it includes the assessment of different circumstances, variations in approach, and incomplete or conflicting data. Different options must be considered and an independent decision made to successfully complete the project.
SupervisionThis position acts under supervision of the Pottawatomie County Director of Geographic Information Systems.
Financial AccountabilityThis position is responsible for departmental equipment and resources but does not participate in the annual budget process.
Personal RelationsDaily contact with the general public, county employees, other Department Heads, and occasional contact with County Commissioners and County Administrator is expected.
