PURPOSE OF JOB:
Working with diverse security staff and other school staff utilizing the equipment and technology in the Integrated security systems and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The patrol officer’s actions cannot be intolerably harsh and rigid when enforcing the safety policies. The patrol officers must always have respect and regard for the students and staff’s emotional and social well-being.
Job duties require continued readiness to respond to situations within specified departmental procedures that may be life‑threatening or harmful, including exposure to dangerous chemicals or other toxic substances, infectious diseases, fire, gunshots, physical confrontations, etc. Duties are performed as assigned in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night). Conduct foot patrols (monitor) inside and outside assigned schools.
You’ll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)
- Preserve the peace, protect District property, prevent criminal acts, apprehend violators, enforce District policies, enforce the Student Handbook, and adhere to the policies and procedures in the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
- Act under the direct supervision of the first line security patrol supervisor and follow all duties prescribed by the supervisor or security director.
- Work any shift (day or night) as required by the 24‑hour responsibility to protect students, staff, equipment, and facilities.
- If assigned to a school, report to the principal for day‑to‑day activities while remaining under the safety & security department’s management control.
- If assigned to the Central Office Building, report directly to the first line patrol supervisor or the safety & security director.
- Remain professional and objective, exercising sound judgment under stress.
- React to situations with appropriate force levels per Security Department and District policy.
- Communicate verbally, in body language, and in writing.
- Prepare clear, concise, and complete reports with minimal spelling and grammar errors.
- Be familiar with all district policies and administrative directives affecting the Security Department.
- Understand federal, state laws, and city ordinances as they apply to the School District.
- Attend all in‑service training as required by the security department management.
- Accept transfers to different assignments for the district’s best interest.
- Maintain and clean department‑issued equipment and assigned vehicles.
- Answer calls for service routed from the dispatcher communication center via district‑issued cell phones, handheld radios, mobile base station radios, and other communication modes.
- Initiate contact and maintain good working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and security organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

To Be Successful at This Job, You’ll Need To: (Qualifications)- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
- Successfully pass the Safety & Security Department pre‑hire multiple choice test and oral interview process.
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment drug screen (subject to post‑accident and reasonable suspicion drug screens).
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment physical abilities test (subject to re‑testing after prolonged illness or injury).
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment psychological exam (subject to testing after catastrophic events or injuries).
