Job purpose

The A&F On-Site Veterinarian will deliver high-quality medical care to all shelter animals, including, but not limited to, spaying/neutering and treating various medical conditions.

Duties and responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing Medical Cases:
    Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of patients.
  • Perform medical intakes on all new cases.
  • Develop skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following medical parameters and guidelines.
  • Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling.
  • Provide high quality individualized care while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices.
  • Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
  • Ensure all vet staff and daily care teams are practicing Fear Free handing.
  • Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referrals for advanced care as needed.
  • Ensure effective use of quarantine and isolation spaces; ensure appropriate use of PPE, dog walk orders, and cleaning orders.
  • Ability to assess medical prognosis and assist in making appropriate euthanasia decisions following appropriate protocols and guidelines.
  • Respond to after-hours medical concerns.
  • Keep staff and fosters/potential adopters apprised of patient medical progress and flow of cases.
  • Teach/Coach and provide team support while collaborating and supporting the work of partner departments.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal partners.
  • Attend daily rounds; ensure individual patients and the population are assessed daily and treatment/intervention recommendations are implemented in a timely fashion considering medical, behavior, and sheltering perspectives.
  • Provide clear expectations and regular practice of feedback and after-actions.
  • Set and model a standard of continuous improvement in all aspects of Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary’s care and handling of dogs and cats.
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings.
Qualifications

Must be currently licensed in the State of Missouri and Kansas to practice veterinary medicine. Must be qualified and eligible to obtain DEA license. Experience in the field of veterinary medicine required, with high volume surgical sterilization experience desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

Supervisory experience, knowledge of shelter medicine and epidemiology helpful. Knowledge of disease recognition in shelter setting required. Effective decision making and diagnostic skills and interest in pursuing treatment options. Strong customer service, oral/written communication skills and interest in networking with other professionals. Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time. Able to deal with staff, volunteers and clients in a professional manner.

Able to direct work of others, train/develop employees and evaluate employee performance.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an animal shelter with shared office space. Potential for exposure to diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics and sharp objects. Field conditions may be encountered. Occasional lifting of up to or over 50 pounds, potential for standing on feet for 8 to 10 hours a day (40 hour work week), animal handling in a veterinary setting.
