The Executive Director of Scraps

KC acts as both the public face and the driving force behind its success. The Executive Director is responsible for setting and implementing the organization’s long-term strategy while managing day-to-day operations. Overseeing critical functions such as program development, fundraising, financial oversight, staff leadership, community engagement and external relations, the Executive Director ensures that every aspect of Scraps

KC aligns with its overarching mission.

With the continuous goal of increasing the impact that our mission makes in the community, Scraps

KC strives to
1) serve teachers in the counties within and around Kansas City by providing free and discounted school supplies;
2) assist marginalized students with basic supplies that enable them to attend school healthy and with dignity to reduce the risk of homelessness today and in the future; and
3) contribute to environmental sustainability through landfill diversion.

In nine years, Scraps

KC has served over 2,000 teachers, reaching over 60,000 students, many in need of essential supplies, and diverted more than 1.2 million pounds of materials from the landfill. Our Creative Reuse Center has been the primary vehicle of funding for the Teacher Resource Center. Therefore, it is also critical to continue to optimize the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the Creative Reuse Center so we can provide the best customer and volunteer experiences.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director at Scraps

They must be able to inspire and lead teams, manage complex budgets, cultivate donor relationships, and navigate challenges with a strategic mindset. They serve as the primary bridge between the board, staff, donors, and the communities they support, making strong interpersonal and communication skills essential.

Leadership and Management
  • Vision and Strategy:
    Develop and implement strategies that align with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Board

    Collaboration:

    Work closely with the board of directors to define and communicate the organization’s vision and direction.
  • Team Leadership:
    Recruit, hire, manage, and develop a strong leadership team and staff. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that supports the organization’s values.
Operational Oversight
  • Program Management:
    Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services.
  • Compliance:
    Ensure that the organization adheres to all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Policy Development:
    Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Budgeting:
    Develop and manage the organization’s budget. Ensure financial stability and sustainability.
  • Fundraising:
    Oversee and participate in fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and fundraising events.
  • Financial Reporting:
    Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to the board and other stakeholders.
Community and Public Relations
  • Advocacy:
    Represent the organization in the community and advocate for its mission and programs.
  • Partnerships:
    Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, community leaders, and other nonprofit organizations.
  • Communications:
    Oversee the development and implementation of marketing and communications strategies to enhance the organization’s public image and outreach.
Strategic Planning
  • Long-term Planning:
    Lead the organization in the development of long-term strategic plans to ensure growth and sustainability.
  • Goal Setting:
