OverviewA municipal government organization is seeking an experienced Director of Corrections & Rehabilitation to provide executive leadership over all correctional and rehabilitative operations. This role is responsible for the strategic, operational, and fiscal management of the department, ensuring safe, compliant, and humane operations aligned with public safety objectives.
This is a senior leadership position requiring extensive experience in correctional administration, regulatory compliance, workforce leadership, and cross-agency collaboration.
Key Responsibilities- Provide overall leadership and direction for all correctional and rehabilitative facilities, programs, and services
- Oversee staffing, operations, and fiscal management of the department
- Supervise senior leadership, including the Administrator of Corrections
- Develop and implement department-wide strategic plans, policies, and performance objectives
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and standards, including ACA, NCCHC, and state jail standards
- Integrate medical, behavioral health, and substance use disorder services within correctional operations
- Collaborate with municipal leadership, law enforcement, courts, health departments, and community partners
- Oversee budgeting, financial controls, and resource allocation
- Lead workforce planning, recruitment, training, and professional development initiatives
- Serve as a departmental representative to elected officials, media, and community stakeholders
- Lead planning and transition efforts related to correctional facilities and infrastructure projects
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in criminal justice, public administration, public safety, behavioral health, leadership, or a related field
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in correctional administration, law enforcement leadership, or public-sector leadership
- At least 5 years in a senior executive or command-level role
- Demonstrated experience managing large, multidisciplinary teams
- Strong knowledge of correctional operations, regulatory compliance, and detainee rights
- Proven ability to manage complex budgets and public-sector operations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Graduate-level degree in a related field
- Experience integrating healthcare, behavioral health, and rehabilitation programs into correctional systems
- Background in trauma-informed leadership and organizational change
- Valid driver’s license
- Successful completion of background investigation, psychological exam, and pre-employment drug screening
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history
- Residency within the local jurisdiction required within a defined timeframe
- Monday–Friday, standard business hours
- Availability outside normal business hours required for urgent operational matters
