Apex Systems is searching for a CAD Drafter that can support a utility outage team in Columb Akron, Ohio.

CAD Drafter - Utility Outage SequencingLocation: Columbus, OH (preferred) | Akron, OH (acceptable)
Contract Duration: 12 months (with strong conversion intent)
Pay Rate: $24-$28/hour
Position OverviewThis CAD Drafting role supports a Utility Outage Sequencing Team working on large-scale electrical infrastructure projects for First Energy. The team is responsible for sequencing outage work across substations to ensure minimal customer impact.
The drafter will work closely with engineers and outage sequencers to create 20-30 detailed AutoCAD drawings per project that collectively tell the "story" of how work will be safely executed without overloading the grid or causing unnecessary outages.
This is a detail-heavy, quality-driven, and deadline-oriented role that values speed, accuracy, and consistency.
Key Responsibilities- Produce and modify AutoCAD drawings documenting outage sequencing plans
- Create multi-drawing "storybook" packages per project (20-30 drawings each)
- Collaborate with:
- Outage sequencers
- Engineers
- Project team members
- Support sequencing decisions that determine:
- When substations can be worked on
- How outages are staged to limit customer impact
- Maintain:
- High drafting accuracy
- Strong quality control
- Fast turnaround times to avoid project bottlenecks
Handle increased workload and deadlines during peak periods (holidays / outages).
Participate in in-person collaboration and travel as needed.
Required Experience & Qualifications EducationAssociate's Degree required
- Engineering Technology, Drafting, CAD, or related field
2-4 years of relevant experience preferred. More junior candidates welcome if utility exposure is strong.
Technical Skills- AutoCAD (required)
- Ability to interpret and document technical sequencing plans
- Strong attention to detail in repetitive, precise drafting work
Electric utility experience
- Substations
- Electrical grid concepts
- High-voltage equipment
- Circuit breakers, switches, and related infrastructure
Utility knowledge can outweigh pure CAD strength - the team is more willing to teach AutoCAD than teach utility fundamentals.
Travel RequirementsOccasional travel required (during the week).
Typical travel:
- Tuesday-Thursday or overnight trips
Locations may include:
- Akron, OH
- Reading, PA
- New Jersey
Travel is project-based and varies by week.
Interview Process- 30-minute virtual interview (manager screen)
- 45-minute in-person panel interview
- o 4-5 team members
- Goal is a quick and efficient process (rarely more than two steps)
