Overview
Assistant Vice President, Mechanical Engineer (Facilities) — WSP in the U.S. This opportunity seeks a Senior level Mechanical Engineer to join our Facilities Division. Location options include Boise, Idaho;
Madison, Wisconsin;
Overland Park, Kansas; open to remote for the right candidate. The Facilities Division specializes in Food & Beverage, Federal, and Industrial facility design. We deliver projects through integrating responsible design for new buildings, remodels, additions, studies, and evaluations of existing systems to help clients change and adapt their facilities and systems to meet their changing goals.
- Provide oversight with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques to identify improvements involving complex building and infrastructure projects from concept through final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
- Perform professional mechanical engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions, equipment, resources, facilities, and systems to determine conformance with rules, standards, and permits.
- Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, cost estimates, construction safety and phasing plans, and updated infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Oversee mechanical design and construction of building and infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, new builds, materials, phasing, and safety plans.
- Lead development and implementation of advanced technologies, modeling techniques, load calculations, and operating strategies to ensure proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems; pursue future-ready solutions.
- Provide high-level technical assistance on automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic systems, and plumbing systems.
- Lead larger-scale mechanical engineering projects, manage budgets, track hours and expenses, supervise subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
- Assist with reviews of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, engineering contracts, and construction inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice.
- Engage with public or private entities to discuss engineering/construction challenges and programs.
- Develop technical reports and presentations to explain research, findings, and recommendations.
- Develop a client base for high-level mechanical engineering services and identify additional business development opportunities.
- Mentor staff to support growth and professional development; stay current in latest mechanical engineering techniques.
- Collaborate with professionals across disciplines, engineers, planners, and authorities on Federal, State, regional, and local projects and opportunities.
- Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, and utility piping design; ability to work with independent judgment and knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, and code requirements.
- Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
- Knowledge of mechanical systems and theory (heating/hydronics, steam, compressed air, refrigeration, natural gas, high-pressure water).
- High proficiency with mechanical engineering principles, design, permitting, and project work.
- Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; rehabilitation and reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and compliance practices; strong technical writing and communication skills.
