Position: Director of Central Library Operations
Overview
Description
Under the direction of Deputy Director Library Services, the position is responsible for establishing and maintaining a patron-centered, customer service focused environment at the Central Library.
This is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $90,000 plus excellent benefits.
Schedule
Monday - Friday: 8:30 am - 5 pm, with expectations for evenings and weekends.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Plans, coordinates, monitors and evaluates goals and objectives of Central Library’s public facing service points and delivery services. Coordinates staffing, schedules and workflow for the Central Library.Directs the delivery of high-quality library services including information and readers' advisory, catalog assistance, customer account assistance, technology and programming to facilitate effective use of library resources. Maintains adequate staffing levels within budgetary limits, evaluates effectiveness of services offered, and sets standards in accordance with library policyDesigns, implements and maintains a welcoming, comfortable, effective and efficient environment throughout the Central Library to enhance the patron experienceLeads trains and directs staff in maintaining a welcoming, comfortable and effective environment for patronsEnsures that the Library’s guidelines on patron behavior are enforcedProvides oversight, implements, and evaluates circulation policies for all KCPL services. Coordinates the design and implementation of basic circulation training for system wide staff.Engages, and directs staff to engage the community and community organizations to promote the Central LibraryCoordinates and implements adult focused public programs that engage the downtown neighborhood community in positive shared experiences.Promotes Central Library services to the community through outreach activities and community engagementDirects personnel to assure productivity: interviews, selects, trains, schedules, develops and evaluates staff; organizes, assigns and reviews work; conveys information to staff and staff concerns to administration; participates on and leads committees and work groupsWorks closely with other departments located within the Central Library to ensure a cohesive experience for patrons.In coordination with Public Safety and Facilities, works with contracted security and janitorial and library staff to maintain a safe, clean environment at the Central Library.Assists with formulation of library goals, objectives, policies and procedures.Prepares monthly report of activities and submits annual budget requestKeeps abreast of current trends and developments in profession and in the Kansas City community.Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assignedRequirements
Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staffDemonstrated ability to engage the communityDemonstrated ability to organize work effectively, lead and direct personnel and plan programsConsiderable knowledge of current management practicesSuperior oral and written communication skills.Strong public relations and public presentation skills.Proven skills in goal identification and achievement.Advanced computer skills.Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructionsAbility to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages utilized in Jackson County, MO, including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.Required Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in relevant fields or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Seven years' experience working in a public library setting or similar public facing / retails setting.
- Five years of management and supervision experience.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed at the Library’s Central location and community partner sites as well as Library Branches throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office space within the branch, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
