Job Description

The School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is continuously seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty teaching positions. This includes positions to teach coursework offered by SESWPS in service to UMKC Essentials, the campus-wide general education program for undergraduate students. The intent of this announcement is to identify a pool of adjunct faculty who are qualified to deliver general education courses.

Specifically, SESWPS staffs UMKC Essentials coursework in the following areas:
Critical Thinking (in the natural sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities), Civic and Urban Engagement, and Culture and Diverse Perspectives. UMKC instructors also contribute to teaching in the First Semester Experience course. Courses are taught in face-to-face, online/synchronous and online/asynchronous modalities; opportunities for specific modalities depend on availability and which specific course is being taught.

Responsibilities of UMKC Part‑time Faculty Members
  • Create and maintain civil and engaging learning environments
  • Deliver curriculum through high quality course instruction
  • Assess student learning of course objectives:
    • Use a variety of evaluation methods
    • Use the early alert system to identify students at risk of failing, when applicable (UMKC Connect)
    • Provide students with prompt, objective, fair feedback on their work
    • Assign grades and maintain student records in accordance with university policy
  • Adhere to and model university standards of professionalism
  • Be accessible to students for conferences / consultations
  • Engage in critical self‑reflection and professional development
  • Use requested technologies (e.g., Canvas, Simple Syllabus) to communicate and share documents with students and campus offices
  • Complete any trainings or certifications required of the position or specific course taught (e.g., annual mandatory trainings, online course certification)
  • This position is part‑time, not eligible for benefits, unranked academic position. Hours vary according to the opportunity. Contracts are generally issued on a semester‑by‑semester basis.

    Qualifications
    • Master's degree or higher in a field aligned with one of SESWPS' four departments (Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations; Psychology and Counseling; Social Work, Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies)
    • Graduate coursework, professional experience, or other training related to the specific UMKC Essentials course(s) being taught
    • Demonstrated commitment to the SESWPS Mission and Vision ()
    • Preferred:
      Previous experience teaching at the university level
    • Preferred:
      Familiarity with various online management systems (e.g., Canvas)
    • Preferred:
      Previous experience teaching online coursework, if applying to teach online sections
