Under the general direction of collaborating physicians, the Physician Assistant (CTS) utilizes advanced clinical and analytical skills to provide direct care and management of surgical patients in the acute care or inpatient setting for pre- or post-surgical patients. The Physician Assistant delivers patient care and medical services to individuals and families utilizing standards of care to assess health status, diagnose medical conditions, develop a medical plan of care, implement treatments, and evaluate patient responses.
The Physician Assistant demonstrates strong leadership, is an excellent communicator, and is effectively able to prioritize a large number of patients in various stages of care.
- Assess patients, analyze and interpret data, formulate problem lists and establish treatment plans for resolution of clinical problems.
- Obtain medical history and perform general/routine examinations under indirect supervision of a physician and appropriately request consults to other specialties when indicated.
- Assist in the OR under direct supervision of the physician and perform office procedures as needed.
- Provide medical and emergency interventions appropriate to the patient’s needs; prescribe and monitor medications appropriate to the diagnosis; order and monitor the appropriateness of emergency interventions.
- Refer complex and high-priority cases to the collaborating physician regarding complicated diagnostic problems, serious illness, complicated therapeutic problems, and re-evaluation of chronic conditions.
- Facilitate evaluation of records by physicians, peers, and quality standards according to protocols; receive and implement constructive directives.
- Develop with the patient, caregivers, and patient care team a mutually acceptable cost-aware plan of care that maximizes health potential.
- Formulate a treatment plan which includes ordering diagnostic tests, selecting appropriate pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions, identifying educational needs of the patient and family, developing a patient education plan, and formulating a discharge/follow‑up plan of care.
- Document accurately all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with regulatory standards and requirements.
- Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies
- Licensed by the State of Missouri Physician Assistant
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Proficiency with electronic health records and database management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
