Job Description

Purpose: The Food Service Substitute prepares and serves meals according to food production and service needs outlined by the Food Service Manager, while observing all Health Department and Food & Nutrition Services Department regulations regarding the safe handling of food. The technician works closely with the cafeteria manager, staff, and district administrators.

Responsibilities include: preparing and serving food, maintaining safety and health standards, operating equipment, and supporting district policies and mission.

Qualifications
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office; TB testing as required.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for school-based Child Nutrition programs and supporting student health.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, communicate effectively, read and compute for following instructions, and pursue career development.
Essential Functions
  • Conform to district guidelines and work cooperatively with staff and students.
  • React positively to change, prepare and serve food meeting nutritional, safety, and customer service standards.
  • Operate and maintain equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Support educational and wellness values, and uphold district and department missions.
Physical Requirements & Environmental Conditions
  • Lift up to 30 pounds, stand or sit for prolonged periods, work in hot/cold environments, handle chemicals, and perform physical tasks like bending, lifting, and reaching.
  • Work effectively in noisy, crowded, and odorous environments.
General Responsibilities
  • Attend training, practice safe food handling, comply with regulations, maintain confidentiality, and follow policies.
  • Perform food prep, service, housekeeping, and financial tasks as assigned, including handling payments and reporting.
  • Respond courteously to inquiries and implement health and safety policies, including emergency and temporary assignments.
Evaluation & Employment Details

Employment is for the academic year plus additional days, with performance evaluated per Kansas statutes and district policy. Entry level, full-time position in education management.
