Summary:
A post‑doctoral fellow position is available immediately in the NIH-funded group of Dr. Chad Slawson. The candidate selected for the position will work as part of a diverse research group comprising undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral level scientists, employing cellular biology, molecular biology, mass spectrometry, and biochemical approaches focusing on understanding the role of O‑GlcNAc in Alzheimer’s disease. The fellow will work on multiple projects in the lab while developing new lines of inquiry.
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. The position is time‑limited, and the primary purpose is to provide research and or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to participate in a full‑time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide opportunities for collaborative and independent research, promote publication of findings, prepare research grants, and participate in relevant academic activities related to a career in research or academia.
The scholar should have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (MD, DVM, PsyD, Pharm
D, etc.), strong English skills, and the ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi‑task, and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for publication, and supervise graduate students.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Cellular microscopy, protein immunoblotting, maintenance of cell cultures, DNA isolation and analysis.
- Attend all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and Department, departmental seminars, and regular lab meetings.
- Provide laboratory training for new students and fellows in the lab.
- Participate in various research projects under the guidance of the faculty supervisor, record and interpret the results of experiments in a laboratory notebook.
- Interact on a regular basis with faculty and other laboratory members to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
- Develop and maintain lab guidelines for specific studies as directed by the lab supervisor.
- Order supplies and negotiate prices on lab consumables.
- Follow established quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, including appropriate documentation.
- Serve as lab safety person as needed; dispose of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps and other hazardous materials in accordance with policy and safety procedures.
- Calibrate, maintain, and operate equipment, keeping appropriate documentation; report malfunctions to supervisor; maintain adequate inventory of lab kits and reagents.

Required Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of experience in cellular biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry (education may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, medicine, or a related science/medicine field.
- Previous lab experience with tissue culture.
- Previous lab experience with protein expression and purification.
