Overview
Hazardous Materials Coordinator - Environment Health and Safety at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). This role is with the Environment Health & Safety (EHS) department and supports the collection, labeling, and disposal of chemical waste generated on campus, while developing tools to track chemical inventories and staying current with local, federal, and state guidelines to maintain campus safety.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate the proper disposal of hazardous materials on the main KC campus and sites at Westwood and Fairway facilities, including creating hazardous waste determinations.
- Inventory, collect, inspect, label, and dispose of hazardous and nonhazardous chemical wastes generated by university laboratories.
- Coordinate with outside vendors to remove waste from campuses within regulated time limits.
- Monitor satellite waste accumulation areas and chemical usage areas for compliance with regulations and university standards.
- Coordinate the proper disposal or recycling of universal waste (used bulbs, mercury-containing equipment, batteries), abandoned compressed gas cylinders, and oil/sludge in oil/water separators.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a waste minimization, pollution prevention, and chemical reuse program under the direction of the Director of EHS; coordinate with outside vendors to recycle silver used in research activities; assist with collection and disposal of biohazardous waste and equipment decontamination.
- Conduct and track safety evaluations of facilities areas and research laboratories to maintain a safe and healthy work environment; understand pertinent regulations, sampling equipment, laboratory alarm systems, and lab equipment related to EHS responsibilities.
- Administer the chemical fume hood certification program: coordinate with contractor for certification, ensure repairs by coordinating with facilities, keep records, and notify laboratory staff of compliance updates.
- Serve as an educational resource to faculty, university personnel, outside regulatory personnel, and EHS office staff regarding environmental federal and state regulations and KUMC policies; assist with development of EHS plans, policies, and training.
- Assist with emergency management activities: investigate and mitigate accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts/transfers/disposals, misadministration, and other deviations from approved safety practices involving hazardous agents; help implement corrective actions; be on-call after hours; serve as alternate emergency coordinator per the University Contingency Plan; serve as alternate EHS representative on the Emergency Planning committee.
- Approve radioactive isotope orders and pickup/receipt of radioactive shipments; manage the physical copies of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the university; other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Participate in required training, including but not limited to:
Annual 8hr HAZWOPER refresher;
Annual Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogen training;
Annual Hazard Communication training; PPE training; introductory RCRA training within 30 days of hire; annual RCRA training; every 3 years DOT training (hazardous waste shipment emphasis);
Autoclave training;
Annual Radiation Safety training. - Serve as a key member of the EHS office, collaborating with other EHS employees to develop and implement programs, resolve compliance issues, and regularly update the EHS Director on program status and any deficiencies.
- Work Experience
:
Four years of experience performing the principal accountabilities described herein; education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Demonstrated knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials regulations, EPA Hazardous Waste regulations, and OSHA regulations. Familiar with basic Microsoft Office suite programs. Experience with research laboratories, chemical cleanup, emergency response, mercury spill cleanup, chemotherapy spill cleanup, infection control, respiratory protection, and chemical fume hood surveys.
Experience with radioactive materials. - Certifications/Licenses
: A valid driver's license. - Preferred Qualifications
:- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, etc.).
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certified.
- Certification as a Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
- Completion of Incident Command Systems Training.
