The Canadian Mental Health Association provides mental health education and mental illness recovery-focused programs and services for people of all ages and their families. We work collaboratively to build community awareness of homelessness and to provide housing opportunities for clients. CMHA Kamloops creates awareness, provides education, and supports individuals and families living with mental health or substance use concerns. Our programs are community-based, and they include supportive and independent living, homelessness services, and peer support.

By working closely with other community agencies, we are bridging gaps in mental health care and facilitating access to critical services and resources.

Hours:

37.5 Hours/week

Salary & Benefits:

$33.99/hour plus Extended Health and Dental, Municipal Pension Plan, EFAP

The Role

The Financial Counsellor supports clients in shelters, supportive housing, and outreach programs to achieve financial wellness. Through individualized sessions, group workshops, and referrals, this position helps clients with tax filing, debt management, budgeting, financial literacy, and accessing financial supports, including government benefits.

The Financial Counsellor collaborates with CMHA staff, community partners, and financial institutions to deliver holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally safe financial empowerment services. They support the creation and monitoring of individualized action plans, deliver educational sessions, and foster integrated service delivery through strong internal and external partnerships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct intake assessments to evaluate clients’ financial situations, including income, expenses, debt, and benefits eligibility.
  • Assist with tax filing, debt repayment strategies, and negotiations with creditors or collection agencies.
  • Develop individualized financial action plans and monitor client progress through follow-up sessions.
  • Deliver financial literacy education, group workshops, and “Teach to File” sessions to promote self-sufficiency.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, data tracking, and performance metrics to support evaluation and reporting.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations, financial institutions, and government programs.
  • Participate in outreach, events, and continuous improvement of program tools and materials.
Key Skills and Experience Required
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Finance, Economics, Social Services, Counselling, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in financial counselling or social services.
  • Strong understanding of financial literacy principles, including budgeting, debt management, credit repair, and tax filing.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and familiarity with benefit and income support programs.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with cultural competence and professionalism.
  • Valid Canadian Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector).
