Position: Sessional - Faculty- BIOL 3130/4150/4350
DUTIES

The Department of Biological Sciences at Thompson Rivers University is made up of a diverse and collaborative group of faculty offering a BSc. degree with majors in:
Biology;
Animal Biology;
Ecology and Environmental Biology;
Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology; and, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Sciences, Chemical Biology. Cross-cutting themes include: the evolutionary frameworks guiding fundamental and applied ecology; responses of humans and diverse living communities to external stressors, including cellular responses; the use of classical and modern statistical, bioinformatic, and genomic tools to interrogate hypotheses and develop solutions for environmental problems.

Core to these themes is a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship, collaboration within the Department and with colleagues across campus, participation in undergraduate Honors and MSc programs, and developing a positive environment where students are encouraged to grow as independent learners and critical thinkers.

We are currently seeking a Biochemist to deliver courses BIOL 3130 (Introduction to Biochemistry: 3 credits), BIOL 4150 (Biochemical Techniques I: 5 credits), and BIOL 4350 (Regulation of Gene Expression: 3 credits). Candidates will be responsible for:

  • Leading these in person lecture and laboratory-based courses by delivering lectures and leading labs where students practice the techniques used in biochemistry. Emphasis is placed on isolation and quantification of biomolecules including column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, enzymatic assays, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Leading discussions about how to perform different biochemical techniques, how regulation of genes expression occurs in cells, and the biochemistry that also occurs to maintain cell function.
  • Creating, administering and grading quizzes and examinations throughout the semester. They will also grade laboratory reports, and presentations in the lab or in the lecture setting.
  • Providing feedback in relation to finding students make in lab.
  • Grading and providing feedback on student written submissions throughout the semester across all courses.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Candidates will have completed a PhD in Biochemistry or a related discipline, along with demonstrated teaching experience at the university level.

    Applicants with an MSc and demonstrated experience may also be considered.
