Position: STO-RE 18R - Wildfire Assistant
Location: 100 Mile House

The Team

The Cariboo Fire Centre and 100 Mile House Fire Zone are established teams made up of diverse individuals who work together toward a shared goal of supporting wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. With more than 46 staff in the Cariboo Fire Centre and a team of 6 office and field staff, a 22‑person unit crew, and a 17‑person initial attack program in the 100 Mile House Fire Zone, you’ll collaborate with a wide range of people across the region and the province.

This team plays an essential role in protecting communities across British Columbia, offering a supportive and fulfilling environment where everyone’s contributions are valued.

The Role

The Wildfire Assistant supports key fire response and fire management activities in the Chilcotin Fire Zone and Cariboo Fire Centre, helping keep communities in the Chilcotin area and Cariboo Region safe. The role contributes to wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, offering meaningful work that directly benefits people across B.C. Two full‑time onsite positions are available—one in the 100 Mile House Fire Zone and one in the Cariboo Fire Centre within the Operations Program.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry or resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus 2 seasons recent related experience;
  • Grade 12 plus 4 seasons related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Related experience is defined as operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management
  • Minimum 1 season of demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Valid class 5 driver licence

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Incident Commander 5 or higher
  • A technical diploma in a field related to forestry or natural resource management
  • Certifications in ICS Coordination Centre Operations, Planning and Logistics functions
Provisos / Willingness statement(s)
  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for position to meet operational requirements.
About this Position

Two positions are available, one at the 100 Mile House Fire Zone and one at Cariboo Fire Centre located in Williams Lake. These positions have full time on‑site requirements. These temporary (auxiliary) opportunities start in approximately February and end in November, with possibility of recall on a yearly basis. These positions may be extended or become permanent. An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.

A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required. Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
