General Accountability

Prepares and provides financial plans, financial analysis, variance analysis, and special reports; offers strategic, confidential advice to senior stakeholders such as the Executive, Deans, AVPs, Directors, and Managers. Serves as a resource for the Financial Planning and Reporting team and other University stakeholders while maintaining a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.

Organization and Structure

This position works closely with other members of the Financial Services team to achieve the strategic and operational goals of the division. Responsibilities include preparing financial statements, analysis, internal and external reporting, budgets, forecasts, and implementation of new systems, business processes and internal controls.

Nature and Scope

The Senior Financial Services Consultant provides comprehensive, strategic and operational advice, guidance, and support in all facets of Financial Management and Financial Planning to academic and administrative leaders across campus. Duties include coordination of external/internal reporting, year‑end preparation, government and agency reporting, assistance with financial system integration, relationships building, process reviews and general accounting functions.

Major Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, forecasts and budgets; produce a variety of financial and legislated reports for government, agencies and stakeholders.
  • Act as a resource within Financial Services by providing direction and coordination on year‑end financial statements, working papers, forecasts and budgets.
  • Provide advice and research on financial policies, procedures and Canadian GAAP (PSAS, IFRS, ASPE) and legislative requirements.
  • Develop processes to deliver accurate management information timely to the University community and federal/provincial stakeholders.
  • Implement appropriate processes for accounting, budgetary control and reporting for all capital projects.
  • Analyze, forecast and monitor TRU revenues and expenditures.
  • Act as liaison with internal departments, managers and external agencies on financial matters, interpretation of financial reports and dissemination of information.
  • Oversee bookkeeping and financial reporting for external related entities (e.g., TRU Foundation, TRUCT, TRULCS).
  • Participate in evaluation and implementation of systems and tools.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Financial Planning team to share knowledge, best practices and efficiency improvements.
  • Stay current on issues affecting the University and Financial Services Division, including participation on University committees.
  • Provide mentoring and education for University staff.
  • Perform other duties, reports or assignments as delegated.
Qualifications Required Knowledge/Skills

Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation with 7+ years of progressive accounting experience in a computerized environment, including experience developing spreadsheets, budgets and forecasts, analytical reports and financial statements. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
