Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Co-op Student
Temporary Full-Time - (1838) The City of Kamloops is inviting motivated students who are currently completing, or have recently completed (2025/2026), a Water and Wastewater Technology program at a recognized institution to gain hands‑on experience with our Utility and Environmental Services Division. This exciting opportunity offers a four- to eight‑month work term, running approximately from May to October 2026, where you’ll help support essential services that keep our community thriving.

As a temporary, full‑time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Co‑op Student, you’ll support daily plant operations, monitor treatment processes, collect and analyze samples, and assist with equipment inspection and maintenance. You’ll work alongside experienced operators, learn regulatory and safety practices, and gain practical skills in process control, data recording, and environmental stewardship.

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:
Typical duties of this position include:
- Visually inspects facility and all equipment daily to ensure proper functioning and facility optimization.
- Assists with facility shutdowns, start‑ups, and process changes, and maintains and controls an inventory of components, parts, and chemicals relating to the wastewater treatment and disposal operations.
- Assists maintenance staff when required, performs routine maintenance and preventative maintenance as assigned, ensures plant and vehicle cleanliness and assists with proper lockout procedures.
- Participates in all in‑house safety programs and safety training records, and ensures that safe work practices and occupational health and safety guidelines are adhered to.
- Performs related duties as required.
Please note that this position falls under the attached Co‑op Student Employment Letter of Understanding. For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes a police information check. This position will receive 4% in lieu of all benefits, vacation, stat holidays, and health time.
This is a CUPE Local 900 position.
As per the LOU, the rate of pay will be:
Term 1: $28.862 (+ 4% in lieu of benefits). Should you be completing more than one term with the City of Kamloops, please refer to the Co‑op Employment Letter of Understanding. All terms of the Co‑op Employment Letter of Understanding apply.
