Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) is seeking an individual with a deep commitment to improving student achievement by providing support to instructional coaches and teachers. The secondary mathematics program is responsible for supporting the professional growth and development of staff at the middle and high school levels to facilitate learning and independent application of effective mathematical practices. The specialist develops and writes curricula for grades 6-12 aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, provides job-embedded support through classroom observations, prescriptive feedback, modeling, data analysis, and supports school-based administrators in making data‑informed decisions related to mathematics.
The specialist also plans and conducts staff development based on division and school needs.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge and understanding of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and the school division’s curricular requirements.
- Assesses the individual and collective needs of secondary math teachers.
- Creates a comprehensive and systematic plan to support the professional growth of teachers.
- Models effective instructional techniques and strategies that engage learners.
- Provides coaching assistance through observation of instruction and delivery of timely and appropriate feedback.
- Writes and develops mathematics curricula and pacing guides for 6-12 math teachers.
- Assists with writing exemplary lesson plans to serve as a model.
- Assists with the development of classroom, school, and division level benchmark assessments.
- Works collaboratively with teachers to analyze data and plan targeted and appropriate lessons.
- Collaborates with instructional coaches, Title I teachers, and core content specialists to identify needs and develop a plan of support.
- Models and provides support with classroom motivation and management to help teachers establish environments conducive to learning.
- Plans and conducts high‑quality professional development activities for school and division staff based on identified needs.
- Stays abreast of current developments, research, and new technology to enhance teaching and learning.
- Attends required staff development activities, team meetings, instructional excellence review (IER) visits and other meetings as deemed necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The applicant must provide a transcript that specifies graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in education, mathematics, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field of study.
- A Master’s degree is required. Credentials shall include, at minimum, strong academic preparation in mathematics and/or an endorsement in secondary mathematics; related endorsements preferred.
- Five years of experience as a classroom teacher is required.
- A math specialist endorsement is highly preferred.
