The Residential Support Advocate supports “all things shelter.” Our shelter has 6 bedrooms and averages at 90+% occupancy, serving 50+ adults and children each year. The Residential Support Advocate provides general support at our shelter facility, both to the residents and for the building itself. This position assists in the provision of direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, dating violence, stalking, and any form of intimate partner violence who are in need of residential services.

The Residential Support Advocate collaborates closely with residential program staff, other members of the Abbie Shelter staff team, survivors, and community partners, acting as a key link in the agency’s comprehensive systems of care and support. This is an entry-level, direct services position that is core to fulfilling the mission of a dynamic and effective organization. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), in-person, on-site position that is located at our shelter facility and supervised directly by the Residential Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services related field OR experience providing direct services to similar populations preferred but not required. Candidates with relevant professional or lived experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Passion for the mission of the Abbie Shelter.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer systems such as Google Drive, Microsoft Office, and client databases.
  • Ability to provide own transportation, lift up to 40 lbs, and work under conditions including but not limited to variable weather, noise, and other potentially unpredictable situations.
  • Provide trauma-informed care while maintaining clear and firm personal boundaries.
POSITION ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Shelter Support:
    Support daily operations at the shelter facility by completing tasks such as food bank pickups, general organization (basement, linens), laundry, receiving and picking up in-kind donations, cleaning/organizing rooms, and performing regular yard/lawn maintenance activities.
  • Facilities Support:
    Coordinate and assist with ongoing and as-needed building maintenance tasks at the shelter facility, including performing minor shelter upkeep activities and scheduling visits with outside vendors. Ensure that all visitors sign proper confidentiality documents when arriving on site.
  • Helpline Support:
    Fulfill at least one Helpline phone shift and one chat shift per week.
  • Volunteer Coordination:
    Receive volunteer applications and follow up accordingly with prospective volunteers.
  • General Inquiries:
    Respond to office calls, website contact forms, in-kind donation requests, and other inquiries from the general public.
  • Direct Service:
    Serve as a key member of the Abbie Shelter’s direct services team. Provide trauma-informed, structured, and compassionate services to all residential survivors. A high level of coordination and collaboration is required across all members of the organization’s staff team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Attend regular weekly staff meetings and other team meetings as scheduled.
    • Client care coordination, including attending weekly Care Coordination meetings.
    • Crisis intervention.
    • Community advocacy.
    • Transportation.
    • Provide wraparound services for survivors.
  • Accessibility:
    Ensure and expand the ability of program participants and community partners to access needed services in an equitable manner.
  • Collaboration:
    Streamline the delivery of programming and services to further strengthen the organization’s roles with our community partners to support the coordinated community response model.
  • Capacity Building:
    Explore and establish systemic venues to support direct services through which the organization can more reliably and predictably interact with survivors.
  • Documentation:
    Complete documentation and keep statistics as needed. Protect the confidentiality of client information. Coordinate and manage data entry with other staff.
  • General Support:
    May include other additional duties as assigned.
