Position: Dir Security (KAL)

The Director of Security provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and administrative direction for the hospital-based Security department. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff while aligning operations with the organizational mission, values, regulatory requirements, and Michigan law.

Operational Leadership
  • Direct and manage daily operations of the Security department to ensure effective, compliant, and responsive services.
  • Lead, coach, and develop Security Officers including hiring, scheduling, performance evaluation, and discipline.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels, including oversight of schedules, holidays, and coverage needs.
  • Oversee departmental training programs to ensure competency, readiness, and compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Manage departmental equipment and ensure personnel are properly trained and equipped.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor departmental operating budgets; identify and correct variances.
Program Quality and Risk Management
  • Ensure high-quality customer service and timely resolution of security-related concerns or complaints.
  • Conduct regular tours of hospital facilities and grounds to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure officer rounds, reports, and activity logs are completed accurately and timely.
  • Review incident reports and oversee investigations related to theft, loss, injuries, or security incidents.
  • Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies, accreditation bodies, and public safety partners.
Legal, Regulatory, and Clinical Collaboration
  • Ensure department operations comply with Michigan law, healthcare regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Michigan criminal law, arrest authority, and hospital-based law enforcement practices.
  • Provide leadership and guidance related to behavioral health encounters, including protective custody under Michigan’s Mental Health Code (PA 330).
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership, risk management, and administration on safety, emergency response, and behavioral health matters.
Leadership and Organizational Engagement
  • Serve as a security and public safety resource for all hospital facilities.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with hospital leaders and external partners.
  • Participate on hospital committees and interdisciplinary teams as assigned.
  • Support organizational performance improvement, cost containment, and innovation initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professionalism.

Ancillary Operations Oversight
  • Provide operational oversight for associate badging, including access control coordination, badge issuance standards, and compliance with security policies.
  • Oversee mailroom operations, ensuring secure, timely, and efficient handling of internal and external mail and deliveries.
  • Manage Kalamazoo operator services, ensuring appropriate staffing, training, professionalism, and customer service standards.
  • Ensure these functions are aligned with Beacon policies, regulatory requirements, and service expectations.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, IT, Human Resources, and clinical leadership to support operational continuity and access needs.
Organizational Responsibilities

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established time frames.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
