Position SummaryThe Professional Onsite Coder is responsible for reviewing provider documentation and assigning accurate codes for surgically complex cases, including specialties such as Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. This role supports insurance authorization, hospital and office billing, and ensures coding accuracy through detailed documentation review, research, and collaboration with providers.
Key Responsibilities- Review provider documentation and dictation to validate appropriate coding for complex surgical cases
- Research and assign ICD-10 and CPT codes aligned with clinical documentation
- Provide surgical codes for insurance authorization
- Review work queues and post charges into the Practice Management System
- Validate documentation accuracy, including dates of service and billing codes
- Run reports, such as Charge Summary reports, for physician and billing review
- Maintain spreadsheets tracking authorizations and surgical cases
- Communicate effectively with providers regarding coding rationale and clarification needs
- Relay messages between providers and internal teams as needed
- Perform general clerical and administrative duties related to coding workflows
- Complete required forms, letters, and documentation
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED required
- CPC or RHIT certification required within 12 months of hire
- Strong working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding
- Solid understanding of medical terminology
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with standard office software and databases
- 12–18 months of coding experience in a healthcare setting
- Experience coding complex surgical cases
Physical Requirements
- Role requires sustained computer-based work with high levels of visual concentration
- Regular sitting, standing, walking, and occasional lifting of light objects required
This role offers hands-on experience with complex surgical coding in a collaborative, onsite environment. You will work closely with physicians and billing teams while developing specialized expertise within a respected healthcare organization.
