Controls Technician

Job Overview

The Controls Technician will play a key role in supporting industrial projects in the Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor areas. You will be responsible for installing, starting up, troubleshooting, and maintaining commercial building automation systems. This includes collaborating with controls engineers to resolve project issues, interacting with clients to understand their needs, and installing new controllers, sensors, relays, and other components as required.

The role also involves system commissioning and requires comfort working around 3‑phase, 480 V power.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to solve project issues.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and wiring diagrams.
  • Read mechanical drawings and control submittals.
  • Follow electrical diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC and electrical issues.
  • Work around 3‑phase, 480‑volt power, 120 VAC, and 24 VAC.
  • Interact with clients to interpret their needs and represent the company in the field.
  • Collaborate with project managers and installation teams to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Modify programs created by the control engineer to match conditions in the space for proper operation.
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively with construction managers, customers, and other project participants to provide technical support.
  • Perform and document system commissioning and sequential testing.
  • Travel to service customers in Kalamazoo, Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, and Grand Rapids areas.
Essential Skills
  • Experience with PLC/BAS troubleshooting (Honeywell, Siemens, Johnson Controls).
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects.
  • HVAC experience with the ability to read MEP drawings and electrical prints.
  • Comfort working with 3‑phase, 480‑volt power, 120 VAC, and 24 VAC.
  • Ability to travel 100% (no overnights).
  • Clean driving record and no fear of heights.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering Degree.
  • Experience with Johnson Controls PLCs.
  • Niagara certification.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
Work Environment

The Controls Technician will be traveling to client sites for the majority of the day and will be provided with a company car, cellphone, and laptop. The schedule is Monday to Friday, day shift, 8 hours per day with little to no overtime. After 3‑4 months, you will be on call one week on rotation from Monday to Sunday, receiving an additional weekly allowance and a minimum of 4 hours pay if called to a client site.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kalamazoo, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $40.00/hr eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
