SALARY INFORMATION
  • Equipment Operator Journey 1: $29.73 hourly
  • Equipment Operator Journey 2: $31.55 hourly
  • Equipment Operator Lead/Journey 3: $33.64 hourly
RESPONSIBILITIES

Operates various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of state of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure. Heavy equipment use will be in a training capacity.

Performs airport and highway maintenance at a State maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certificated airport. Responsible for maintaining state highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. Complies with all applicable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and State of Alaska rules and regulations concerning maintenance and operation of highways and airports.

Tasks include snow removal, road maintenance, asphalt repair, security inspections at the airport, maintaining airport lighting systems, clearing right‑of‑ways and airport safety areas of vegetation overgrowth, and training for any emergency that may occur. May require travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods during the summer months to complete projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
  • Vehicle operation experience with motor vehicles, trucks, or watercraft.
  • Problem solving: identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.
  • Eye‑hand coordination: accurately coordinate one's eyes with fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job‑related tasks.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; for Journey 2 & 3 a tanker (N) endorsement required and hazardous materials endorsement may be required. Must obtain and maintain firearms qualification where applicable.
  • Drug screening required prior to operating equipment requiring a CDL. Upon licensure, subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with established policy.
  • For Equipment Operator Journey 3: demonstration of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training and competencies if flexing from Journey 2 to Journey 3.
EDUCATION

Provide transcripts or evidence of completed units if no degree. For foreign education, provide verification from a private organization or U.S. university indicating equivalency.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Demonstrated experience in maintenance operations for highways or airports. Provide employer name, job title, dates of employment, and whether full‑time or part‑time in application.

  • Special weapon qualification: position requires use of firearm or ammunition. Conviction of misdemeanor domestic violence disqualifies. Firearms qualification must be obtained where applicable.
  • Compliance with DOT PF Drug and Alcohol Policy; cannot start work without confirmation of pre‑employment drug test pass.
