About the Role

The Assistant Marine Manager will facilitate the discharge and back‑loading of equipment to ensure the on‑time departure from Dutch Harbor and on‑time arrival to our sister ports. The role coordinates workflow to allow for a smooth and timely transition of operational needs, remains enthusiastic and flexible throughout an ever‑changing operational environment, manages union workflow assignments, stevedoring operations, stowage planning, and vessel dispatches accurately.

The Assistant Marine Manager maintains position relationships with labor, contract workers, and governmental regulatory agencies, accounts for efficient yard operations that expedite the movement of cargo through the port, maximizes vessel operational needs and equipment efficiencies to ensure productivity meets or exceeds standards, ensures monitoring of chassis and equipment within marine control, and improves profits by maximizing the offset formulas within contract requirements.

What you’ll do:
  • Manage, plan, and implement stevedore operations to achieve the highest level of marine productivity and customer service at the lowest cost and efficient workforce utilization.
  • Maintain key performance objectives and ensure that vessel pro forma schedule requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Develop effective and productive communications and relationships with inter‑terminal departments, longshore, contract vendors, U.S. government agencies, vessel crew, and internal customers in a quality, customer‑focused manner.
  • Coordinate and plan with the vessels, marine departments, and vessel support personnel where necessary to ensure an accurate and safe stowage plan for all vessels.
  • Directly communicate and plan with terminal, marine, Maersk, and fleet operations personnel the requirements of marine operations and resolve problems as required.
  • Accurately account for productivity on vessels.
  • Account for stevedoring activities provided by Matson for other organizations for billing purposes.
  • Direct and lead all work assignments for the ILWU (International Longshore & Warehouse Union) walking boss in a productive, efficient, and cost‑effective manner.
  • Manage the performance of longshore personnel on a daily basis, including recommending or implementing disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Accountable for efficient dock operations.
  • Maintain dock equipment and supplies inventory.
  • Ability to read and interpret the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Other duties as assigned.
