Position: Summer 2026 Crossing Guards - EASY APPLY! ($25-$30/hour DOE)

Juneau Welcome Guards support public safety and hospitality in the heart Downtown Juneau during our busy season. This position will ensure the safe and orderly movement of pedestrians and vehicles at assigned downtown crosswalks and requires being alert, professional, courteous, and capable of sustained outdoor physical activity.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Kindly control pedestrian flow using STOP paddles, a whistle, hand gestures, and voice commands.
  • Maintain continuous situational awareness of multiple traffic flows and pedestrians, including those with mobility aids, children, and tourists unfamiliar with crosswalk protocols.
  • Wear assigned gear use a 2-way radio to maintain communication with the team.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires continuous outdoor activity in a marine climate, including rain, wind, and variable temperatures.

  • Mobility and Reflexes:
    Requires rapid response to changing traffic conditions and emergency situations.
  • Standing and Walking:
    Must be able to walk 1-3 miles/day and stand for 4 hours without extended breaks.
  • Lifting and Carrying:
    Ability to lift and transport up to 35 lbs. (e.g., safety cones, signage).
  • Vision and Hearing:
    Must possess sufficient visual and auditory acuity to assess traffic flow and quickly respond to environmental cues, verbal input from pedestrians and drivers, and rapidly changing conditions.
  • Cognitive and Emotional Stamina:
    Must remain calm, attentive, and decisive under stress or confrontation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION DESIGNATION

Due to the safety-sensitive and physically demanding nature of this position, all listed physical and cognitive functions are considered essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations cannot be provided where such accommodations would fundamentally alter the essential functions or compromise public safety. Pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title I, 42 U.S.C. § 12111(8), the employer has determined that the ability to perform continuous outdoor physical activity, maintain situational awareness, and exercise independent judgment under dynamic conditions are bona fide occupational qualifications (BFOQs) for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum Age: 18 years old
  • Preferred prior experience in Tour Operations, Security, Hospitality, Transportation, or Public Safety.
  • Fluency in English is required; ability to speak other languages at any level is considered to be a plus.
  • Must have a personal phone for text messaging (daily schedule reminders, etc).
  • Must have a clean driving record (no DUIs or DWIs) and successfully pass a background check, pre-employment drug screening (for drugs that are illegal in Alaska), and reference verification.
