What You Will Be DoingAs a Juvenile Justice Counselor you will be part of a team dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Alaskan youth. You will influence, inspire, and transform the lives of juvenile offenders and their families through therapeutic programs that incorporate a restorative justice approach, community protection, and youth accountability. Your relationships with the youth will help deliver skills and knowledge for navigating life, anger management, and substance use education.

As a counselor you support this mission by working with residents and maintaining the safety of all facility stakeholders.

The Working Environment You Can ExpectThis position is located at the Johnson Youth Center on Hospital Drive, Juneau. It is a 24‑hour secure facility that requires shift work, holidays, weekends, and occasional overtime.
Who We Are Looking ForIn addition to the Minimum Qualifications below, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following competencies:

- High school diploma or GED
- 20 years of age or older
- Valid driver’s license at appointment
- Background investigation, criminal record check and medical examination required
- Six months of paid or volunteer experience teaching or coaching group activities for youth, OR
Six months of experience as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1 for the State of Alaska, OR
Six months of experience in corrections, law enforcement, probation, residential treatment, or social casework - Completed post‑secondary coursework may substitute (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of work experience); military experience may substitute on a month‑for‑month basis
- Copies of transcripts if used to meet MQs (unofficial acceptable if institution name/URL is listed)
- Three professional references (names & phone numbers)
- Two performance evaluations from previous employers, if available
- Copy of current driver’s license
The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including a state and FBI fingerprint‑based check.
