Location: Bethel Youth Facility, 950 State Highway, Bethel, Alaska

Job Description

This position is open to Alaska residents only. The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1/2 position in Bethel. The vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant’s training and experience. Applicants are encouraged to apply for all levels they are qualified for.

What You Will Be Doingool

As a Juvenile Justice Counselor you will be part of a team that is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Alaskan youth. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing therapeutic services that incorporate a restorative justice approach to community protection.
  • Influencing, inspiring, and transforming the lives of juvenile offenders and their families through program implementation.
  • Delivering life‑skills training, anger management, drug and alcohol education, and related programs.
  • Maintaining the security and safety of residents, visitors, staff, and facility buildings.

Working Environment

Shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime. Working as part of a 24‑hour unit security team.

Minimum Qualifications

PJ03A1 – Juvenile Justice Counselor 1:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Age 20 or older.

PJ03A2 – Juvenile Justice Counselor 2:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six months paid or volunteer experience teaching or coaching group activities for youth, OR six months as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1, OR 6 months experience in corrections, law‑enforcement, parole, probation, residential treatment casework Patrol or social casework.
  • Demonstrated achievement of department‑approved performance standards.
  • Age 20 or older.

Substitutions

  • Completed coursework from an accredited college may substitute work experience at a ratio of three semester or four quarter hours per month.
  • Military experience may substitute work experience on a month‑for‑month basis.

  • Three professional reference names and phone numbers.
  • Two performance evaluations from previous employers, if available.

At the appointment you must submit:

Background Check

Applicants must pass a comprehensive background investigation that includes a state and FBI fingerprint‑based check.
