The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help keep Alaska moving.
What you will be doing:
- Professionally maintain all heavy‑ and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with secondary roads, rural airports, and other agency vehicles.
- Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods; perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on heavy equipment.
- Diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems (air and electric) for light and heavy‑duty equipment.

Working environment: Position located in the Fairbanks shop at 2301 Peger Road. Traveling to remote locations in small planes possible; day trips and overnight stays. Work across Alaska’s diverse terrain, requiring adaptability and resourcefulness.
Who we are looking for- Mechanical – knowledge of machines and tools, design, repair, maintenance.
- Flexibility – open to change, adapt rapidly, handle unexpected obstacles.
- Vehicle Maintenance – knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, systems, design, repair, maintenance.
- Self‑management – sets realistic goals, high initiative, minimal supervision, motivated, responsible.
Documents required at interview:
- Class A CDL, front and back (if applicable).
- Three professional references – name, title, phone number.
Commercial Driver’s License required: Class A CDL per federal regulations (49 CFR 383). Conditional hire approval available; applicant must obtain CDL within 120 days of hire.
Drug and alcohol policy: Selected candidates must comply with DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy. Cannot start work until Drug test pre‑employment confirmation received.
Tool allowance: Employees must provide own hand tools; monthly tool allowance paid.
Education: Verify education credentials, attach transcripts (unofficial accepted), include number of units if no degree. Foreign education may be used if submitted to credential interpretation organization.
Work experience: Provide employer name, job title, dates, full or part time. Minimum qualifications must be met.
