As an Underground Mobile Maintenance Mechanic assigned to our town shop, you will be employed by the mine while working locally within the Juneau area. This position focuses on teardown, inspection, component rebuild, and replacement of heavy underground mining equipment. Your work directly supports safe, reliable production by preparing equipment for optimal performance when returned to site.
About UsThe Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing over 500 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquarters in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. The winner of numerous safety and environmental awards, Greens Creek is seeking new team members committed to professional growth and success.
Here’swhat you can expect in this role
- Perform teardown and thorough inspections of mobile underground mining equipment.
- Rebuild, replace, and install major components including engines, transmissions, axles, pumps, hydraulic systems, and drive lines.
- Assist with welding, fabrication tasks, and tire changes on rubber‑tired equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and determine corrective actions with reliability and quality in mind.
- Apply mechanical aptitude in maintenance and repair activities while completing required logs and maintenance reports.
- Collaborate with supervisors, planners, and parts coordinators to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Execute preventive maintenance practices and quality assurance checks prior to release.
- Work both independently and within a team, prioritizing tasks based on daily assignments.
- Training first. Every hire receives MSHA training during their first four days on the job.
- Department‑level training emphasizes safe work practices and proper task execution.
- Safety is foundational: each work area and piece of equipment must be inspected prior to work every day.
- You will learn to identify workplace hazards, complete field inspections, and elevate concerns immediately.
- A team you can rely on. We support each other and work together to stay safe.
- Each project in the town shop runs on a five‑week timeline from start to completion.
- Sundays are optional and may be used to advance project progress.
- Per fatigue‑management policy, a maximum of 21 consecutive days may be worked.
- After each project cycle, employees receive two weeks off before the next assignment begins.
After one year, transfers to the remote mine site may be requested, working either a two weeks on/two weeks off schedule, or a two weeks on/one week off schedule.
Professional GrowthThis is a rewarding role where you will learn the inner workings of specialized underground mining equipment. You will gain hands‑on exposure to:
- Diesel powertrains and hydraulic systems
- Drivetrains, brakes, and underground duty axles
- Electronic controls and component diagnostics
- Mechanical rebuild standards and reliability practices

- Strong mechanical aptitude with heavy equipment
- Ability to work independently and within a structured team
