Fish and Game Coordinator (Southeast Regional Management Coordinator) located in Douglas/Juneau, Ketchikan, or Sitka, Alaska.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the general direction of the Regional Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the management of sport fisheries in Southeast Alaska. The individual must understand and apply principles of fisheries management, be familiar with Alaska Fish and Game Laws, and understand BOF protocols.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing salmon, resident species, groundfish, and shellfish in Southeast Alaska.
- Leading and supervising a large group of highly motivated Area Management Biologists located remotely.
- Effectively articulating complex and controversial positions to diverse stakeholder groups.
- Overseeing management activities and projects associated with the Pacific Salmon Treaty process, including serving on the Northern Boundary Technical Committee.
- Coordinating all fishery management activities within Region I and managing interactions with the Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF).
- Collaborating with federal entities such as the US/Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty, Pacific Halibut Treaty, and the Magnuson‑Stevens Fisheries Conservation Act.

The Division of Sport Fish offers unique professional challenges ranging from enhanced urban fisheries to remote open‑water fisheries. Area offices in Southeast Alaska provide opportunities for outdoor recreation such as fishing, hunting, hiking, and kayaking.
Working EnvironmentThe position may be located in Douglas/Juneau, Ketchikan, or Sitka. It requires occasional travel to meetings, training, remote field projects, and area offices for up to two weeks at a time.
QualificationsWe seek candidates with the following competencies:
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise fisheries management activities for multiple fisheries.
- Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills, serving as the department spokesperson.
- Experience synthesizing biological, statistical, and socioeconomic issues in natural resource management.
- Experience supervising fisheries biologists and evaluating performance.
A valid driver's license is required. Access to firearms and ammunition may be required during field work. First Aid/CPR certification, peace officer authorization, and other documentations are expected.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management; AND seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist with at least one year in program management or two years at an advanced professional level.
SubstitutionsBachelor’s degree supplemented by specific credit hours or a master’s/doctorate degree can substitute for experience requirements as detailed in the original posting.
