What You Will Be DoingThis position is for a Northern Cook Inlet Research permanent seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 crew member for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Sport Fish Division, in Palmer, AK. Currently this position works on a Chinook Tagging project on the lower Yentna River at river mile 6 and assists at a Chinook enumeration project at Lake Creek (a tributary of the Yentna River) approximately nine miles east of Skwentna, AK.
This position will assist up to two crew members in the daily operation and maintenance of both remote field camp projects. Crew members will collect, record, and enter daily tagging and sonar data daily and report daily counts to the Palmer Fish and Game office. Other tasks include tagging Chinook with esophageal radio tags, operating and maintaining two aluminum fish wheels, entering data into excel spreadsheets, viewing and measuring Chinook salmon using ARIS sonar, fishing for resident species, counting all other fish captured, operating and maintaining solar battery banks and generators, operating and maintaining rigid weirs, operating and maintaining outboard skiffs, traveling with a skiff on swift moving streams, traveling in fixed wing aircraft, rod and reel sampling for resident and salmon species, and general maintenance of a remote field camp.
This technician also may help out with tracking radio tags and staying in multiple camps. During the field season, this position will also assist other field camps in the construction, maintenance, and logistics of some management salmon assessment resistance board weirs. This position has the opportunity to be a part of and assist with several aspects of the Palmer Fish and Game office and gain experience from several different types of projects.
This position helps all camps in the Palmer office achieve success by filling in where needed, purchasing gear, purchasing groceries, and transporting gear utilizing boats, highway vehicles, and fixed wing aircraft.

This position works in the Palmer Sport Fish office and helps run research projects that gather data for area managers to attain knowledge of the Mat Su Valley's sport fisheries. Currently this position's primary duty will assist in the operation of Chinook enumeration projects on the Yentna River.
This data will increase the knowledge of the Yentna River drainage sport fisheries. This position also insures that several projects are successful via logistics and filling in where needed.
The Palmer Sport Fish office is a small group of employees working together on projects that influence several fisheries in the Matsu Valley.
The Working Environment You Can ExpectThis position is a permanent seasonal crew member on a Chinook research project utilizing fish wheels to capture and tag Chinook salmon at RM 6 of the Yentna River (a tributary of the Susitna River), and with ARIS sonar on Lake Creek approximately 9 miles east of Skwentna, AK. The primary functions of this position are operating skiffs with jet outboard motors on large and small shallow glacial streams of Southcentral Alaska for travel to field camps where you aid other technicians to supply field camps, to enumerate Chinook salmon using ARIS Sonar, and tag Chinook with esophageal radio tags.
This position will reside at a remote field camp with other technicians for the Chinook season as needed, which is approximately 2 to 3 months (May to late July) and will assist with most aspects of camp operations. At the field camp there is room and board provided; the crew lives out of personal tents and has a communal kitchen mess tent.
While working in town during Chinook season and post Chinook season there is no provided housing. This position also assists other projects during and post Chinook season within the Palmer, AK Sport Fish Division office installing and dismantling field camps and equipment in various remote locations for example: fish wheels, rigid weirs, floating weirs, and sonar.
